Peter Riegert shines in 'King of the Corner'

A funny, sharp and touching look at middle-aged angst, "King of the Corner" is a charming directorial debut from journeyman actor Peter Riegert that's sure to hit home with anyone who's lived much of life.
Riegert stars as Leo Spivak -- father, husband, son and marketing wiz, with each role currently taking its toll. His teenage daughter Elana (Ashley Johnson) is seeing a questionable boy. His cantankerous father Sol (
Eli Wallach) is a fountain of criticisms and fears, living in a rest home in Arizona, miserably frustrated by his age. And his wife Rachel (
Isabella Rossellini) can sense the pressure her husband's under even if she can't help him manage it.
Meanwhile, the young guy Leo's mentoring at work (Jake Hoffman) is stealing his ideas. Leo's smart enough to know his seniority makes him a target; he's seen plenty of other one-time wonders invited to the boss's office, never to return.
Riegert, who co-wrote the screenplay with Gerald Shapiro, leisurely lets Leo sift through each of his problems. He takes on the mantle of stern but loving father, to little avail. He switches to the role of understanding and caring son, but doesn't really know what he can do for a father approaching the inevitable end.
Such is Leo's key problem -- at work and with his daughter, he's old; with his wife and his father, he's still comparatively young. He's being squished in the middle, losing any viable identity just at the time he needs one.
Riegert establishes Leo's plight and then runs him through a series of life changes. In the film's final, glistening moments, he lets his characters fade off in a manner that's both lovely and intentionally transient, which may be the most any of us can hope for.
"King of the Corner" is the sort of
wise, witty and honest movie that stays with you long after the credits roll. It doesn't need to knock you out; it grows inside to greater effect. :meghajolo
